Biography of Alex van Warmerdam
Alexander Lucas Maria van Warmerdam, born on August 14, 1952 in Haarlem, Netherlands, is a Dutch filmmaker, actor, director, screenwriter, producer, composer, writer, and artist. He has played a role in almost all of his films, for which he also wrote the screenplays.
Early Career
In 1974, van Warmerdam was one of the founders of the theater group Hauser Orkater, which later became the musical theater Orkater. In 1980, he and his brother, Marc van Warmerdam, established the theater group De Mexicaanse Hond (translated as "The Mexican Dogs"), under which name all of their shows have been produced since 1989.
Film Career
Van Warmerdam directed his first feature film, the comedy "Abel," in 1986. He played the lead role of Abel, an adult recluse who has not left his parents' home for ten years. The film marked the beginning of his successful career as a filmmaker.
Personal Life
Alex van Warmerdam is married to Dutch actress Annet Malherbe, who has also appeared in many of his films. They have two children, sons Mees van Warmerdam and Houk van Warmerdam. Both of their sons have acted in their father's films, including "De noorderlingen" (1992) and "Kleine Teun" (1998). Mees has also become a musician and participates in various performances of the theater group "De Mexicaanse Hond".
Recent Work
Van Warmerdam's latest film, the thriller "Borgman," was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
