Early Life and Education
Aleksandr Ambartsumovich Karapetyan was born on March 28, 1950, in Yerevan, Armenia. He graduated from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1974 as an engineer-economist. In 1986, he completed his studies at the Baku Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
Career in Academia and the Communist Party
Karapetyan's career began as a senior laboratory assistant at the Department of Engineering Hydrology at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute from 1974 to 1976. During this time, he also served as the secretary of the Komsomol Committee for the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
From 1976 to 1980, Karapetyan ascended to the positions of second and later first secretary of the Komsomol Committee at the Polytechnic Institute. He further advanced in the Communist Party ranks, becoming the second and then first secretary of the party committee for the "Yerevanstroy" Production Union from 1980 to 1985.
Government and Business Roles
In 1985, Karapetyan transitioned to government service, working as an instructor in the Construction and Urban Economy Department and later the Socio-Economic Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (CPA).
From 1991 to 1992, he served as head of the department at the joint stock company "Prometheus-Zakneftegazstroy." In the following years, he held positions at the "Gorstroy" Construction and Installation Union, including deputy director and director of the commercial center.
Political Career
Karapetyan's political career took shape with his role as chairman of the limited liability company "AK and K" from 1995 to 1996. In 1996, he became general director of the Armenian-Bulgarian joint venture "Armbolinvest," a position he held until 1999.
In 1999, Karapetyan was elected to the Parliament of Armenia. He served as a member of the Standing Committee on Financial, Credit, Budgetary, and Economic Issues and was part of the "Law and Unity" faction.
Karapetyan's parliamentary tenure continued from 2003 to 2007. During this period, he served on the Standing Committee on Social, Health, and Nature Protection Issues. He was also the secretary and first deputy chairman of the "National Unity" party and a member of the Armenian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Current Role
Since 2007, Aleksandr Karapetyan has remained the first deputy chairman of the "National Unity" party.
