Early Life and Career

Born on February 20, 1943, the future cosmonaut grew up in Moscow as the son of a military serviceman. In 1969, he graduated from the evening faculty of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

During his early career, he worked at a design bureau, involved in developing control systems for spacecraft. From 1964 to 1978, he held the position of shift flight director.

Selection and Training as a Cosmonaut

In 1978, he was selected for the 10th Group of Civilian Specialists in the Soviet cosmonaut corps. He underwent comprehensive training for spaceflight, including preparation for flights on Soyuz T spacecraft and Salyut orbital stations.

First Spaceflight (1983)

From June 27 to November 23, 1983, the cosmonaut participated in his first space mission as a flight engineer on Soyuz T-9. He spent 149 days aboard the Salyut 7 orbital station, completing two spacewalks totaling 5 hours and 45 minutes.

Second Spaceflight (1987)

On July 22, 1987, he embarked on his second spaceflight as a flight engineer on Soyuz TM-3 alongside Aleksandr Viktorenko and Syrian cosmonaut Muhammed Ahmed Faris. He joined the crew of the Mir space station, working for 160 days before returning to Earth on December 29, 1987.

Honors and Accomplishments

The cosmonaut has been awarded the following honors:
- Twice Hero of the Soviet Union
- Two Orders of Lenin
- Order of Hero of Syria (Syria)
- Order of Friendship and Cooperation (Syria)
- Honorary Citizen of Kaluga, Russia

He currently works at a design bureau and continues to contribute to the field of space exploration.
