Early Life and Career

Aleksandr Petrovich Burago was born in Kharkiv on March 4 (16), 1846. He entered the Russian Imperial Army and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a colonel.

Heroism in the Russo-Turkish War

During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, Burago distinguished himself at the Battle of Plovdiv. As a captain, he led a squadron of 63 Leib Dragoons into the city late at night on January 3 (15), 1878.

Burago discovered that the Turks were already evacuating and pursued them, capturing a significant number of prisoners, weapons, and equipment. His actions were instrumental in the capture of Plovdiv without resistance.

Recognition and Awards

For his bravery, Burago was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th Class, on February 27 (March 11), 1878. A monument to the liberating squadron stands on the road from Plovdiv to Pazardzhik.

Later Life and Passing

After the war, Burago contracted tuberculosis and sought treatment on the island of Madeira. He passed away there and was buried in the Tikhvin Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.
