Alexander Gavrylyuk: A Ukrainian-Australian Pianist
Early Life and CareerAlexander Gavrylyuk was born in 1984 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He began learning to play the piano at the age of 7 and made his first stage appearance at just 9 years old. In 1996, he became a laureate of the Senigallia International Piano Competition in Italy, and a year later, he won the second prize at the II Vladimir Horowitz International Competition in Kyiv. In 1999, at the age of 15, Gavrylyuk won the first prize and gold medal at the III Horowitz Competition, becoming the youngest laureate of the competition.
International Success
In 2000, Gavrylyuk achieved international recognition when he won the IV Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan. The Japanese critics hailed him as the "best 16-year-old pianist of the late 20th century." Since then, Gavrylyuk has regularly performed in Japanese concert halls, such as Suntory Hall and Tokyo Opera City Hall, and has recorded two compact discs in Japan. He has also performed in renowned venues around the world, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Lincoln Center in New York, and many others.
Collaborations and Awards
Gavrylyuk has collaborated with esteemed conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yuri Simonov, Mikhail Pletnev, and Vladimir Spivakov. From 1998 to 2006, Gavrylyuk lived in Sydney, Australia. In 2003, he became an artist of the Steinway firm. His concert activities in Australia include solo performances at the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall, and collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
Recent Achievements
In 2009, Gavrylyuk made his debut in the Master Pianists series at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, receiving an invitation to perform again in the same series in the 2010-2011 season. He also performed and recorded all of Sergei Prokofiev's piano concertos with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy. Gavrylyuk continues to tour extensively, performing with orchestras and participating in festivals worldwide.
Personal Life and Controversies
In 2004, Gavrylyuk was involved in accusing his teacher, Viktor Makarov, of sexual harassment. Makarov was sentenced to a lengthy prison term, but in 2010, most of the charges against him were dropped.
