Alexander Isachev: A Brief Biography
Russian artist Alexander Anatolyevich Isachev (1955-1987) was a talented graphic artist whose life was tragically cut short at the age of thirty-three. He was born in the village of Ozarichi in the Kalinkovichi district of Belarus. Due to his parents' unsuccessful marriage, Isachev spent a significant portion of his childhood away from home. He first attended the Mozyr boarding school, and later, from the fifth grade onwards, the Minsk Republican school for music and fine arts, where his artistic abilities became evident. However, he was eventually expelled from the school for gifted children. This led to a period of wandering, poverty, and working as a porter.
Rejected by official circles, Isachev sought solace among the non-conformist artists of Leningrad. In the 1970s, when Isachev returned to his hometown of Rechitsa, he developed his artistic credo. Considering the old European masters as his teachers, he predominantly focused on biblical subjects and created icons for churches. As his wife and closest friend, Natalya Nikolaevna Isacheva, revealed to the magazine "Ogonek" in 1989, his reading interests included the works of A.F. Losev and S.S. Averintsev, publications from the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies, myths and epics from around the world, and poetry from India, China, and Japan.
Although Isachev worked tirelessly, his efforts were not considered "socially useful," and he even faced accusations of idleness. However, recognition finally came during his lifetime. In late 1987, the first exhibition of his works opened in Rechitsa. Two days later, Isachev passed away from a heart attack near his easel in his studio. The years of grueling work, humiliation, and indifference had taken their toll.
Isachev's artistic method can be compared to the enigmatic "bead game" from Hermann Hesse's novel of the same name. By drawing upon the invaluable experiences of past eras and delving into myths and legends, he sought to unravel the eternal mysteries of existence. What is truth and falsehood, good and evil, love and hatred, beauty and deformity, youth and old age? Regardless of how we answer these questions, they will never disappear. And thus, what Alexander Isachev created will endure.
