Biography of Alexander Zhavoronkov

Alexander Alexandrovich Zhavoronkov was born on February 24, 1979, in Riga, Latvia, to a family of engineers. He had a passion for programming and biology during his school years and participated in city-wide competitions. He also practiced karate and hand-to-hand combat. In 1997, Alexander enrolled at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, where he earned two diplomas with honors: one in commerce with a specialization in finance from the School of Business, and another in computer science with a specialization in distributed databases from the Faculty of Science and Arts. He also studied German and Spanish languages. While at university, Alexander actively participated in sports and competed in Taekwondo tournaments.

In 1998, Alexander co-founded the company Boss IG, which developed and produced industrial infrared heaters. Towards the end of 1999, he became deeply interested in web programming and launched seventeen internet projects within six months, including online auctions, a portal for medical staff, and a thematic domain name generator. Although most of these projects discontinued over time, one of them, www.domainfellow.com, remained active and attracted tens of thousands of users per month.

After graduating from university, Alexander worked as a product marketing manager at the head office of PMC-Sierra, Inc. in Vancouver, Canada. He coordinated the development, testing, and production processes and successfully launched the CHESS-NB family of telecommunication processors. He also established partnerships with over twenty leading global telecommunication equipment manufacturers and initiated mass shipments of chipsets. In 2001, ATI Technologies Corporation decided to shift its business strategy from manufacturing graphic cards under its own brand to selling graphic solutions through partner manufacturers. As a result, Alexander Zhavoronkov was invited to join ATI as a business manager for desktop solutions in 2002. He was responsible for sales development, pricing policies, and maintaining relationships with key partner manufacturers. He successfully won numerous tenders with major PC manufacturers.

In 2003, Alexander moved to ATI's European office in Germany as a regional manager for Central and Eastern Europe. In this role, he developed and executed joint programs with partner manufacturers, key customers, and the press. He also launched new products and recruited personnel to expand the company's presence in the region. By introducing high-performance products, expanding partner business, and implementing new marketing programs, ATI's sales in Central and Eastern Europe increased more than fourfold in 2003. In 2004, Alexander Zhavoronkov established the Russian representation of ATI in Moscow, where he recruited a team of employees. He attributed ATI's success in the Russian market to the dedication and talent of the Moscow office staff, as the sales of graphic cards based on ATI processors in 2005 exceeded the figures of 2002 by more than ten times.

In August, during ATI Technologies' 20th anniversary celebration, Alexander Zhavoronkov was recognized as the best sales director. He considered the joint program "Find Agent Ruby" with Merlion, aimed at promoting the brand in retail networks, as ATI's most successful marketing campaign in Russia. This program resulted in the installation of eye-catching stands featuring the redhead beauty Ruby, the symbol of the new generation of ATI RADEON accelerators, in many computer stores and supermarkets.

Despite his demanding work schedule, Alexander finds time for sports and scientific research on the genetics of aging. Alongside his role at ATI, he pursued a master's degree in molecular pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University's Department of Biotechnology in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. In 2004, Alexander completed a laboratory internship at the international biotechnology center of Lomonosov Moscow State University in the field of genetic engineering. He subsequently entered the doctoral program at the Department of Biophysics at the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University.
