Early Life and Education

Alexander (Sender) Kipnis was born in Zhitomir, Ukraine, to an impoverished family. His vocal talent was evident in his childhood, and he joined a synagogue choir after his father's passing. Kipnis pursued a comprehensive musical education, studying conducting at the Warsaw Conservatory and later vocal performance in Berlin under renowned педагог Ernst Grenzebach.

Operatic Career

Kipnis made his operatic debut in Hamburg and went on to perform at the Wiesbaden Opera before becoming a leading bass at the Berlin Municipal Opera. He also appeared at the Berlin and Vienna State Operas, and made regular appearances in Chicago. Kipnis's career culminated in his membership in the ensemble of the Metropolitan Opera (New York) from 1940 and performances in major theaters worldwide.

Exceptional Voice and Repertoire

Kipnis possessed a voice of exceptional timbre and nuance. He excelled in over 100 operatic roles from German, Italian, and Russian repertories, many of which he sang in multiple languages. Kipnis was also a renowned performer of lieder, particularly by Brahms.
