Aleksandr Anatolyevich Lishnevsky

Aleksandr Anatolyevich Lishnevsky is a contemporary Russian artist who has been actively working in the field of modern art for over four decades. As the commissioner and organizer of the South Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art, he has played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of the region.

Early Life and Military Service

Lishnevsky was born in Ukraine and served in the Soviet Air Force from 1976 to 1978. During his military service, he simultaneously pursued his artistic interests as a draftsman and agitprop artist.

Education and Artistic Influence

After his military service, Lishnevsky enrolled in the Kiev National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture in 1978. However, he later transferred to the Rostov-on-Don Art School named after M. B. Grekov, which was an informal center for contemporary art at the time. This school, led by Yuri Shcheblanov, had a profound influence on Lishnevsky's artistic development.

The Moscow Period and Artistic Opportunity

In 1983, Lishnevsky moved to Moscow to study at the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Art and Industry. During his time in the capital, he witnessed major cultural shifts, including the fall of the Iron Curtain, which opened up new artistic opportunities.

Return to Rostov-on-Don and Artistic Success

After graduating from Stroganov, Lishnevsky chose to return to Rostov-on-Don and teach at the Rostov-on-Don Art School. In 1992, he participated in the "Luxuries from Russia" project in the Netherlands. However, the project ended abruptly when the paintings were stolen.

The South Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art

In 2005, Lishnevsky established the South Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art. The biennale aims to provide a platform for emerging and established artists in the region. With the support of local activists and funding from private donors, the first biennale was held in a renovated tobacco factory in Rostov-on-Don.

The Path to Recognition and Challenges

Lishnevsky's contributions to contemporary art have been recognized with several awards, including the "Person of the Year" award from the magazine "Sobaka.ru." The South Russian Biennale was also nominated for the State Prize "Innovation" in the field of contemporary art.

Despite its initial success, the future of the biennale was threatened by a lack of government support and a change in the region's cultural landscape. However, Lishnevsky continues to pursue his artistic and curatorial endeavors, teaching at the Southern Federal University and exhibiting his work internationally.
