Life and Early Career
Alexander Neville was born into the influential Neville family of Northern England, the son of Ralph de Neville, 2nd Baron Neville de Raby, and Alice Audley. As a younger son, he pursued an ecclesiastical career, becoming a canon in York. His rise through the ranks of the Church was aided by the patronage of King Richard II of England.
Archbishop of York
On April 3, 1374, Alexander was elected Archbishop of York, and on June 4, he was consecrated as bishop. During his time as Archbishop, Alexander enjoyed a close relationship with King Richard II.
Rebellion and Exile
In 1386, a rebellion by the Lords Appellant erupted against King Richard II. Alexander was accused of treason and was to be imprisoned in Rochester Castle in 1388. However, he managed to escape before his arrest.
Pope Urban VI transferred him to the See of St Andrews in Scotland, but Alexander never took up the position. Instead, he spent the rest of his life in Leuven, serving as a parish priest. Alexander passed away in May 1392 and was buried in the Carmelite church.
