Biography of Alexander Onishchenko
Alexander Onishchenko is a Ukrainian entrepreneur and former member of the Ukrainian Parliament. He served as a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the 7th and 8th convocations, representing the Party of Regions and the faction "People's Will," respectively. In 2016, he left Ukraine after losing his parliamentary immunity due to criminal charges of fraud and embezzlement. Onishchenko denies all allegations and claims to be a victim of political persecution. In May 2017, Interpol rejected the request from the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine for an international arrest warrant.
Early Life and Career
Alexander Onishchenko was born into a military family. His father, Rajab Kadyrov, was a major general and former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, as well as the former head of the Main Directorate for the Execution of Punishments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan. Onishchenko graduated from the Kharkov Higher Military School of Rear Services of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1991. From 1990 to 1997, he worked as an entrepreneur in the fuel and energy sector. During the same period, he also served as the Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Dnipro District Branch of the Union of Afghan Veterans in Kyiv.
Personal Life
Alexander Onishchenko is the father of four children: Diana (born in 1994), Alexander (born in 2002), Roman (born in 2017), and Veronika (born in 2021 in Ankum, Germany).
Equestrian Sport
In 1998, Onishchenko developed an interest in equestrian sport. He was subsequently elected Vice President of the All-Ukrainian Public Organization "Federation of Equestrian Sport of Ukraine." Since 1999, he has participated in national and international competitions. In 2000, he became the owner of a horse farm in Belgium and implemented a program to train reserve athletes for the national team abroad, providing them with financial support for training with European specialists. In 2002, he was unanimously elected President of the Federation of Equestrian Sport of Ukraine.
Onishchenko represented Ukraine in the equestrian discipline of eventing at the 2008 Olympic Games in China. The Ukrainian team achieved 12th place, marking their first appearance in the top positions. In 2012, he participated in the Summer Olympic Games in London, but was eliminated in the first qualifying round, finishing in 70th place. He has also been a member and medalist of various tournaments, including the World Championship in Aachen in 2006, where he finished fourth.
Government Service
In 2007, Onishchenko joined the civil service as an assistant to the Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine. In 2008, he obtained a second higher education degree in Enterprise Economics from the National Transport University.
Political Career
Onishchenko has had a political career since 2010 when he became a deputy of the Kyiv Regional Council representing the Party of Regions. In 2012, he was elected as a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the 7th convocation, again representing the Party of Regions. However, he left the Party of Regions on February 20, 2014, and joined the faction "Economic Development." In November 2014, he became a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the 8th convocation, representing electoral district No. 93. He is a member of the parliamentary group "People's Will."
"Gas Case" and Legal Issues
Onishchenko is accused of fraud and embezzlement amounting to 740 million Ukrainian hryvnias in gas supply contracts. On June 16, 2016, the Office of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered a motion to lift Onishchenko's immunity, detain him, and arrest him. On June 17, 2016, a court ordered the arrest or release on bail of 200 million hryvnias for one of the suspects in Onishchenko's case. On June 19, 2016, Onishchenko stated that the criminal case against him was an attempt to take away his business.
On June 22, 2016, Onishchenko filed a lawsuit against the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, demanding a refutation of statements made by the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Nazar Kholodnytsky, who had accused him of being the organizer of a criminal scheme.
