Alexander Plohin: A Life in Banking and Tragedy
Early Life and EducationAlexander Alexandrovich Plohin was born on February 13, 1948, in Chernivtsi, Ukrainian SSR. He graduated from the Moscow Higher Technical School named after N.E. Bauman in 1976 and earned a Candidate of Technical Sciences degree in 1980.
Political Career
In 1990, Plohin was elected to the Moscow City Council (Mossoviet), where he chaired the Budget and Finance Policy Committee until 1993.
Banking Career
In 1994, Plohin became the manager of the Chertanovo branch of Sberbank. Under his leadership, the branch transformed from a loss-making institution into a leading one, earning recognition as the most effective among Sberbank's 34 Moscow branches in 1995 and 1996.
In 1999, Plohin completed a second higher education at the Russian Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Russian Federation. His dissertation focused on marketing as a factor in the sustainable development of commercial banks. The results of his research were implemented in Sberbank's four-year development program and the Academy's curriculum.
Vneshtorgbank
Plohin held various leadership positions in Sberbank until 2003, when he joined Vneshtorgbank. In March 2006, he was appointed director of the Vneshtorgbank 24 branch on Novy Arbat.
Assassination
On October 10, 2006, Plohin was shot and killed at his apartment entrance in Moscow. The murder was believed to be related to his professional activities. The Moscow Prosecutor's Office initiated a murder investigation, but the motive remained unclear.
Connections to Andrey Kozlov's Death
A month prior to Plohin's assassination, Andrey Kozlov, First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, was also killed. Some media outlets suggested a connection between the two murders as part of a "redivision" in the banking system. However, this claim was strongly denied by the President of the Association of Russian Banks.
