Early Life and Education
Александр Владимирович Политковский was born on September 15, 1953, in Moscow, Russia. He had a typical childhood in the city. In 1973, after serving two years in the military, he enrolled in the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University.
Career in Television
After graduating in 1979, Poliktovsky initially worked at the main editorial office of sports programs at "Ostankino". In 1985, he joined the main editorial office of youth programs at Central Television, where he contributed to popular shows such as "12th Floor", "Before 16 and Above", and "World and Youth". Poliktovsky became a part of the team responsible for "World and Youth", which covered a wide range of topics and aired weekly.
Creation and Impact of "Vzglyad"
In October 1987, Poliktovsky played a pivotal role in the creation of the iconic television program "Vzglyad" alongside A. Lyubimov, V. Listyev, and D. Zakharov. Initially a correspondent, he later became one of the main hosts. "Vzglyad" dominated television ratings for a decade, revolutionizing news and commentary in the Soviet Union. It became the first private television entity, transforming into the VID Television Company ("Vzglyad" and Others).
In 1991, "Vzglyad" was suspended due to alleged threats to free speech. Poliktovsky and Lyubimov defied the ban by producing "Vzglyad from the Underground" from their apartment, distributing it on video cassettes. Upon reinstatement, Lyubimov became the host, while Poliktovsky gained a monthly slot for his author's program "Politburo".
Post-"Vzglyad" Career
In 1995, Poliktovsky launched the new project "Territory of TV-6" on the channel "TV-6 Moscow". As always, accuracy in reporting remained his guiding principle. From 1989 to 1993, he served as a deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation. In 2000, he founded and led the company "Politkovsky Studio".
Personal Tragedy and Legacy
On October 7, 2006, Poliktovsky's wife, renowned journalist Anna Politkovskaya, was murdered in the entrance of their apartment building.
Today, Poliktovsky continues to live and work in Moscow, directing his own television studio and hosting programs. He has also directed documentaries, including "Behind the Windows of August" (1992) and "Behind the Windows of August-2" (1993).
