Alexander Prior: A Musical Prodigy
Alexander Prior, a composer and conductor, has been compared to Mozart and Chopin - he is young and undeniably brilliant. Opinions on the young prodigy differ: some believe that Prior is just another wunderkind, while others believe that his musical abilities are a natural phenomenon. However, there is no doubt about his immense talent.
Early Life and Musical Talent
Alexander Prior was born in 1992 in London, United Kingdom, to a Russian mother and a British father. It is known that one of Prior's ancestors is Konstantin Stanislavski. Contrary to the belief that the children of great people do not inherit their talents, Alex quickly emerged from the shadow of his ancestors - he first sat down at the piano at the age of three, and at the age of eight, he composed his first musical piece. By the way, the piano is not the only musical instrument that Alex plays - he mastered several instruments in his childhood. His parents noticed his musical gift early on and encouraged and cultivated his talent. Before his voice began to change, Prior recorded and released a compact disc. The Royal College of Music in London admitted him practically without exams. However, disappointed with the quality of music education in Britain, his parents sent Alexander to the renowned St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he continues to study composition and conducting.
Early Success and Charitable Work
In 2005, Alexander already presented his own composition - the ballet "Mowgli," based on the works of Rudyard Kipling, in Moscow. The premiere took place at the "New Opera" theater as part of the Summer Ballet Festival. Regarding his work, the musician said, "I write a ballet not about animals but about humans. Kipling's characters are types of human characters disguised as different animals, and his jungle is a model of our society's organization." In the same year, Prior became the youngest laureate of the BBC Young Composer of the Year competition and won the Young Composers competition in Russia.
The musician is also known for his charitable actions. In 2005, Alexander became a candidate for the role of UN Goodwill Ambassador. He has organized charity concerts to help Russian orphaned children, and at the age of eleven, he composed a requiem in memory of the young victims of the terrorist attack in Beslan. In 2006, his "Piano Concerto No. 1" was presented at the International Festival of Piano Music in St. Petersburg.
Continued Success and Future Endeavors
In 2009, Alexander took second place in the conducting competition in Leeds. In February 2010, he will participate in the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg.
Alexander is fluent in English and Russian, and he also sings in Italian, French, and Latin. To date, he has composed around forty musical works, including an opera, two ballets, preludes, symphonies, and piano concertos.
Appointment as Assistant Conductor
Among Alexander Prior's recent achievements is his appointment as Assistant Conductor of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. When needed, Prior will fully replace the working conductors during rehearsals and concerts. The seventeen-year-old genius will not only further develop his own abilities in his new position but also bring something new to the acclaimed ensemble.
Alex is extremely confident when it comes to his compositional work, stating, "The 20th century was a cacophony, a dissonance. The 21st century is a melody, and I write for the 21st century."
