Alexander Karlovich Anders

Alexander Karlovich Anders was a Russian and Soviet military leader born in 1880. As a Lutheran, he demonstrated unwavering dedication throughout his career and beyond.

Early Life and Education

Anders hailed from a military family and enrolled in the Nizhny Novgorod Cadet Corps, graduating in 1898. He then pursued his education at the Mikhailovsky Artillery School, graduating with distinction in 1901.

Military Service

Upon graduation, Anders served as a sub-lieutenant in the 23rd Horse Artillery Battery. In 1908, he completed the prestigious Nikolaev Military Academy with honors. Throughout his career, Anders held various significant positions, including Senior Adjutant to the headquarters of the 18th Infantry Division and Assistant to the Chief of Staff of the 2nd Ober-Quartermaster.

World War I and the Revolution

During World War I, Anders served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief. After the outbreak of the Russian Revolution, he volunteered to join the Red Army in 1918.

Civil War

Anders held key roles during the Russian Civil War, including Chief of Staff of the 1st Ryazan Infantry Division and the 2nd Tula Rifle Division. He also served as Chief of Staff of the 5th Army and the 4th Army on the Eastern Front.

Post-Civil War Career

After the war, Anders served as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Crimea. He later became Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Military District and Assistant to the Commander of the 5th Army in the Far East.

Arrest, Execution, and Rehabilitation

In 1937, Anders was arrested and executed by the NKVD on charges of anti-Soviet activities. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1956.

Family Life

Anders was married to Olga Borisovna Ozerova, a niece of Elena Alexandrovna Ozerova, the wife of Sergei Nilus. They had at least three children: Elena (1905-1924), Boris (1907-1931), and Alexander (1909-1979).
