Early Life and Career
Nikolai Vasilyevich Aksyutin was born in 1916 in the village of Aksyutino, Omsk Governorate (now Orenburg Region), into a working-class Ukrainian family. After completing primary school, he worked as a locksmith in Ordzhonikidze before moving to a sanatorium in Yalta.
Military Service
Aksutin enlisted in the Red Army in September 1941 and joined the front lines in August 1942. As a captain and commander of a rifle company in the 589th Rifle Regiment of the 216th Red Banner Rifle Division, he fought in various battles on the Southern and 4th Ukrainian Fronts.
Heroic Deed
On April 8-9, 1944, Aksyutin led his company in an assault on the Syvash Isthmus. His unit was among the first to penetrate the enemy trench, eliminating approximately 30 German soldiers. They then captured another trench and a narrow defilee between lakes. Aksyutin personally destroyed six enemy officers and soldiers and suppressed two enemy firing positions.
Death and Legacy
Aksutin was killed in action on April 9, 1944. For his courage, bravery, and heroism, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 16, 1944.
