Early Life and Education

Alexey Nikolaevich Vasiliev was born on March 16, 1902, in Astrakhan, Russia. He went on to study at the Institute of Red Professors in 1926, laying the foundation for his future career in law.

Legal Career and Military Service

Vasiliev began his legal career in 1924 as a prosecutor in various organs. From 1938 to 1942, he served as Secretary of the Commission on Legislative Proposals of the Council of the Union of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. During World War II, Vasiliev participated in the civil war and was appointed Deputy Prosecutor of the RSFSR in 1942, and then Prosecutor of Moscow in 1944. Notably, Vasiliev represented the USSR as the State Prosecutor at the Tokyo Trial for Japanese war criminals.

Academic Career

In 1952, Vasiliev earned his doctorate in law with a dissertation on the "Principles of Investigative Tactics." He also defended his candidate's dissertation on "Criminal Responsibility for Embezzlement of State and Public Property" in 1952. Vasiliev's academic career spanned over three decades, beginning with his appointment as Head of the Tactics Sector at the All-Union Research Institute of Criminalistics of the USSR Prosecutor's Office in 1952. In 1960, he became the Head of the Department of Criminalistics at the Law Faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov.

Contributions to Criminalistics

Vasiliev was a prolific scholar, authoring numerous works on general and specific aspects of criminal investigation tactics. His most significant publications include:

His works remain influential in the field today, with his monograph "Problems of the Methodology of Investigating Specific Types of Crimes" being republished in 2002 in the "Anthology of Criminalistics" series, alongside the works of renowned Russian and international criminalists.

Awards and Legacy

Alexey Nikolaevich Vasiliev received the title of Honored Scientist of the RSFSR in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of law. He passed away in Moscow on December 19, 1987, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship and a profound impact on the development of criminal investigation tactics in both Russia and beyond.
