Alexander Velichansky: A Renowned Russian Poet and Translator
Early Life and Literary BeginningsAlexander Velichansky, a distinguished Russian poet and translator, was born into a literary family. Despite his prolific output, only one collection of his poems was published during his lifetime. However, his works were featured in numerous magazines and anthologies. His first official publication appeared in the prestigious literary journal Novy Mir in the late 1960s.
Poetry and Translations
Velichansky's literary contributions consisted of both original poetry and translations from Greek, Georgian, and English. His poignant and evocative verses earned him widespread critical acclaim from fellow poets such as Joseph Brodsky and Alexander Tvardovsky. Velichansky's skill as a translator is particularly evident in his masterful renderings of the works of Konstantinos Kavafis.
Posthumous Recognition
After Velichansky's passing in 2000, his widow compiled his translations into the book "Ohota na echo" ("Echo Hunt"). This collection showcases the extraordinary breadth and depth of his literary talent.

Perhaps the most widely recognized of Velichansky's works is his poem "Pod muzyku Vival'di" ("To the Music of Vivaldi"). Set to music by Viktor Berkovsky and performed by the renowned duet Tatiana and Sergei Nikitin, the song became an enduring hit in the film "Nochnaya smena" (1978).
