Alexander Vilenkin is an American physicist and cosmologist who has made significant contributions to the theories of cosmic strings and quantum gravity. He is also a renowned science popularizer.
Early Life and Education
Vilenkin was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, to Vladimir Lvovich Vilenkin, a geologist and author. He graduated from the physics faculty of Kharkiv University in 1971, where he conducted research under the guidance of E. A. Kaner.
Emigration and Academic Career
In 1976, Vilenkin emigrated to the United States. Two years later, he became a professor and director of the Institute of Cosmology at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. He has held this position ever since.
Research Interests
Vilenkin's research focuses on the formation of the universe and the nature of spacetime. He is particularly interested in cosmic strings, hypothetical one-dimensional objects that may have played a role in the early evolution of the cosmos. He has also made important contributions to quantum gravity, which seeks to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity.
