Early Life and EmigrationAlexander Winton, a visionary Scottish-American businessman, inventor, and racing enthusiast, was born in Grangemouth, Scotland, on June 20, 1860. The son of a marine engineer, Winton displayed a keen interest in mechanics from an early age. In 1879, he immigrated to the United States, where he initially pursued bicycle manufacturing.
Automobile Production and Invention
Recognizing the growing demand for automobiles, Winton shifted his focus to car production. In 1898, he made history by designing and constructing the world's first semi-trailer, a revolutionary innovation in automotive transportation. The following year, he found the first customer for his invention.
Driven by the goal of delivering automobiles directly to customers without adding mileage, Winton developed the first car-hauling semi-trailer truck. Today, semi-trailers, including dump trailers, are widely used in construction, mining, and grain transportation.
Winton Engine Works
In 1903, Winton's automobile company, Winton Motor Carriage Company, employed around 1,200 people. After building his first marine engine, he pivoted to diesel engine production. In 1916, he founded Winton Engine Works, where he served as president until 1928.

Winton was a prolific inventor, holding over 100 patents for automotive safety and performance improvements. Notably, he made his safety-related patents available for free use.
