Early Life and Education

Born in Moscow in 1869, Aleksandr Vladimirovich Fomin demonstrated an early interest in botany. He graduated from Moscow University in 1893 with a degree in natural sciences.

EXPEDITIONS TO THE CAUCASUS

From 1888 to 1890, Fomin embarked on several botanical-geographic expeditions to the Caucasus alongside distinguished colleagues. These expeditions significantly expanded his knowledge of the region's flora.

ACADEMIC CAREER

In 1896, Fomin commenced his academic career as an assistant at the University of Tartu. In 1902, he became a botanist at the Tbilisi Botanical Garden. From 1914 to 1927, he held prestigious positions as Professor at the University of Kyiv, Director of the Kyiv Botanical Garden, and Director of the Institute of Botany under the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Focus on Ferns

Fomin's primary research interest focused on the study of ferns, particularly those native to the Caucasus, Ukraine, Siberia, the Far East, and the Soviet Union as a whole. His publications on ferns made significant contributions to the field.

Recognition and Legacy

In recognition of his groundbreaking work, Fomin was elected an Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1921. Numerous plant species have been named in his honor, including the endemic plant of Georgia, Petasites fominii Bordz. Fomin's legacy as a renowned botanist and fern expert continues to inspire generations of researchers.
