Early Life and Education
Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko was born on August 30, 1954, in Kopys, Orsha District, Vitebsk Oblast. He graduated from the history faculty of Mogilev Pedagogical Institute and the Belarusian Agricultural Academy in 1975.
Military and Political Career
From 1975 to 1977, Lukashenko served as an instructor in the political department of the Western Border District in Brest. In 1977-1978, he became the secretary of the Komsomol committee of the city food trade department and later an instructor for the Oktyabrsky district executive committee in Mogilev.
Rural Management and Political Activation
From 1978 to 1980, Lukashenko took on the role of executive secretary of the "Znanie" society's district organization in Shklov, Mogilev Oblast. In 1980-1982, he served as deputy commander of a military unit.
From 1982 to 1994, Lukashenko held various positions in agriculture. He was deputy chairman of the "Udarnik" collective farm and deputy director of the construction materials plant in Shklov. From 1985 to 1987, he became secretary of the Communist Party committee of the Kolkhoz named after Lenin in Shklovsky District. From 1987 until July 1994, Lukashenko served as director of the "Gorodets" state farm in the same district.
Presidency
In July 1994, Alexander Lukashenko was elected President of the Republic of Belarus. He has since been re-elected five times, despite international criticism of his authoritarian and oppressive rule.
International and Academic Roles
Lukashenko has also held international positions. From 1996 to 1997, he was chairman of the Interstate Council of the Integration Quartet (Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan). Since 1997, he has been chairman of the Supreme Council of the Union of Belarus and Russia. He is also a full member of the Academy of Social Sciences.
