Life and Career

Alexander Mikhailovich Panchenko was born in Leningrad in 1937, the son of two literary scholars who worked at the Pushkin House. His father, Mikhail Andreevich Panchenko, was a pioneer in Russian literary studies.

Early Education and Influences

Panchenko's upbringing immersed him in the world of literature. He attended Leningrad University, where he graduated in 1958. He then studied at Charles University in Prague, returning to Leningrad University to complete his studies the same year.

Academic Trajectory

After completing his studies, Panchenko embarked on his academic career at the Institute of Russian Literature (IRLI) in 1962. He specialized in Old Russian literature, defended his dissertation in 1964, and obtained his doctorate in 1972.

Institutional Leadership

Panchenko's academic contributions led to his elevation to various leadership positions at IRLI. He headed the Department of Russian Literature of the 18th Century from 1986 and the Department of Modern Russian Literature from 1988.

Teaching and Outreach

In addition to his research, Panchenko was passionate about teaching. He lectured at the Leningrad State Institute of Culture (1975-1984) and became a professor at the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute (1984). He also delivered lectures in Paris in 1992.

Panchenko was a prominent figure in Russian literary circles. He served as a member of the editorial board of the journal "Russian Literature" and "Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences." He also held membership in the Union of Writers of the USSR.

Panchenko's contributions were widely recognized. He was elected as an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1991 and received the State Prize of Russia in 1996. He was also awarded the International Prize of Saints Cyril and Methodius in 1998.
