Early Life and Education
Alexander Andreyevich Prokhanov was born on February 26, 1938, in Tbilisi, Georgia. After completing secondary school, he graduated from the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Aviation Institute in 1960. Prokhanov is fluent in English.
Career Beginnings
Prokhanov initially worked as an engineer and later as a forester in Karelia and the Moscow region. From 1960 to 1970, he served as a journalist for the newspapers "Pravda" and "Literaturnaya Gazeta."
Literary Breakthrough
In 1971, Prokhanov published his first non-fiction books, "I Go My Way" and "Letters from the Village." He was admitted to the Union of Writers of the USSR in 1972.
Patriotic Advocate
From 1986 onwards, Prokhanov made significant contributions to patriotic publications such as "Molodaya Gvardiya," "Nash Sovremennik," and "Literaturnaya Rossiya." In August 1991, he supported the actions of the State Emergency Committee (GKChP).
Editorship of "Den"
Prokhanov was appointed editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Den" in December 1990. In September 1993, following President Yeltsin's decree to dissolve the Supreme Soviet, Prokhanov published an article calling for the overthrow of the "anti-people Yeltsin regime" and support for the Russian parliament. As a result, the Russian Ministry of Justice suspended the publication of "Den" on October 4, 1993.
"Zavtra" Newspaper
In November 1993, Prokhanov became editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Zavtra." He has continued to advocate for Russian patriotism and has extensively covered armed conflicts in the former Soviet Union.
