Dulgheru started playing tennis at the age of 4 when her parents brought her to a tennis club. Her father, Dimitru, is a pilot, and her mother, Doina, also works for an airline company. She has a sister named Bianca, who is currently a hotel manager. Bianca also played tennis in the past but did not achieve great success.

Dulgheru is a former junior world No. 6 and has had notable achievements in both singles and doubles. She reached the final of the junior Wimbledon doubles tournament in 2006 and was a semifinalist in the singles tournament at Orange Bowl in 2005. She also reached the semifinals of the junior Roland Garros doubles tournament in 2006 and the quarterfinals of the junior Wimbledon singles tournament in the same year.
