Early Life and Family

Princess Alexandra, HRH(born Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel; 25 December 1936) is a member of the British royal family. The cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, Alexandra is the only daughter of George, Duke of Kent (the fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary) and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark, the daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia.

Birth and Christening

Princess Alexandra was born at Coppins, Iver, Buckinghamshire, on Christmas Day 1936. Her christening took place in the Private Chapel at Buckingham Palace on 9 February 1937. Her exceptional godparents included King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of Norway, Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom, and Count Carl Theodor zu Toerring-Jettenbach.

Childhood and Tragedy

Alexandra spent her early childhood in Britain. During World War II, she lived with her paternal grandmother, Queen Mary. Tragically, her father was killed in an aircraft crash on 25 August 1942.

Royal Duties

From the late 1950s, Princess Alexandra has carried out numerous royal duties on behalf of the Crown. In 1959, she made a tour of Australia, and in 1960, she represented the Queen at Nigeria's independence celebrations. Other countries she has visited in an official capacity include Canada, Thailand, Norway, Italy, and Gibraltar. Alexandra serves as an honorary fellow of several medical schools in the UK and abroad. She is also patron of the English National Opera, the London Philharmonic Choir, the London Academy of Arts & Music, and the President of WWF-UK.

Marriage and Children

On 24 April 1963, Princess Alexandra married the Honorable Angus James Bruce Ogilvy (1928-2004), the second son of the 12th Earl of Airlie and Lady Alexandra Coke. The wedding ceremony was attended by the entire royal family and broadcast worldwide, with an estimated 200 million viewers. The couple had two children: James and Marina.
