Jacob Rothschild: British Investment Banker, Philanthropist, and Rothschild Family Head
Early Life and Education
Jacob Rothschild was born on April 29, 1936 in Berkshire, England. As the only son of Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, and Barbara Judith Rothschild (née Hutchinson), he is a direct descendant of Nathan Mayer Rothschild, the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty. Rothschild attended Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he studied under the renowned historian Hugh Trevor-Roper.
Business Career
Jacob Rothschild began his career at the family bank, N M Rothschild & Sons, in 1963. However, a family dispute led to his resignation in 1980. After selling his minority stake in the bank, he gained independent control of Rothschild Investment Trust (now RIT Capital Partners plc), an investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In 1991, he co-founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group (now St. James's Place plc) with Sir Mark Weinberg. Rothschild also held various other venture and property interests, including investments in the Russian oil industry.
Philanthropy
Jacob Rothschild was deeply involved in philanthropy throughout his life. He served as Trustee of the National Gallery, Chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, and Chairman of the Heritage Lottery Fund. He also played a key role in the restoration of Somerset House in London and the Waddesdon Manor estate in Buckinghamshire.
Waddesdon Manor
Rothschild inherited Waddesdon Manor in 1988 and developed a close connection with the estate, which had been built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1880s. He commissioned the Flint House, a RIBA Award winner, on the estate. Rothschild donated Waddesdon Manor to the Rothschild Foundation, which manages it for the National Trust.
Personal Life
On October 20, 1961, Rothschild married Serena Mary Dunn, granddaughter of Canadian financier Sir James Dunn. They had four children: Hanna Rothschild Brookfield, Beth Rothschild Tomassini, Emily Rothschild Freeman-Attwood, and Nathaniel Rothschild. Lady Rothschild passed away in 2019.
Honors and Legacy
Jacob Rothschild was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 2020. He also received the J. Paul Getty Trust Medal in 2014. Rothschild passed away on February 26, 2024, at the age of 87. He left behind a legacy of philanthropy, business acumen, and leadership within the Rothschild family.
