Alexandra Elizabeth Paul was born on July 29, 1963, in New York. Her mother, Sara, was a social worker, and her father, Mark Paul, was an investment banker. Alexandra has a twin sister named Caroline Paul, who was one of the first women to join the San Francisco Fire Department and has published memoirs titled "Fighting Fire: A Personal Story." Her younger brother, Jonathan, is an animal rights activist and is currently serving time in federal prison for arson at a slaughterhouse in Redmond, Oregon.
