Early Life and Education

François Antoine Xavier de Genneval(1798-1830), a French actor, poet, and the author of the Belgian national anthem, received a solid education. He spent two years working in a Parisian bank before deciding to pursue a career in theater.

Theatrical Debut and Rise to Fame

In 1824, Genneval began his acting career in Ajaccio, later moving to Marseille. On May 27, 1826, he made his Parisian debut at the Théâtre de l'Odéon in "Tyran domestique." He continued to perform in various roles in Paris, Lille, and Brussels, where he played leading lover roles at the Théâtre de la Monnaie.

Involvement in the Belgian Revolution

The outbreak of the Belgian Revolution in 1830 had a profound impact on Genneval's life. He wrote the "Brabançonne," which became the Belgian national anthem, and actively participated in the street fighting in Brussels. His participation in the battle against Dutch forces on October 18, 1830, proved fatal.

Death and Legacy

Genneval died tragically in the Battle of Lier, struck by one of the last bullets fired in the conflict. His untimely demise at the age of 32 left a lasting legacy in both France and Belgium. His contributions to theater and the Belgian independence movement continue to be celebrated today.
