Alexandru Agache is a Romanian opera singer (baritone) who has been actively performing in opera houses around the world since 1979. He is known for his remarkable vocal flexibility and power, particularly excelling in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi.
Early Life and Education
Agache was born in Cluj, Romania, where he later studied at the conservatory. It was during his time in Cluj that he made his opera debut in 1979 at the Napoca Romanian National Opera, portraying the role of Silvano in Verdi's "Un ballo in maschera."
Career in Romania
Throughout the 1980s, Agache continued to perform at the Romanian National Opera in Cluj, taking on roles such as Count di Luna in "Il trovatore," Germont in "La Traviata," Iago in "Otello," Malatesta in "Don Pasquale," Pozz in "Don Carlos," Sharpless in "Madama Butterfly," and Schaunard in "La bohème." He also had the opportunity to perform leading roles such as Don Giovanni and Nabucco in operas by Mozart and Verdi, respectively.
International Recognition
Agache gained international recognition in 1987 when he joined the Berlin State Opera on a tour to Tokyo, where he portrayed the role of Count Almaviva in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." The following year, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London as Renato in "Un ballo in maschera."
Agache would go on to have multiple appearances in England, performing as Amonasro in "Aida," Enrico Ashton in "Lucia di Lammermoor," Miller in "Luisa Miller," Rigoletto, and Simon Boccanegra. In 1989, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, performing in Gaetano Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore." Three years later, Agache made his first appearance at the Grand Opera in Houston, Texas, reprising his role as Count di Luna.
In 1999, Agache made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera and in 2000, he performed on the stage of the Arena di Verona Festival. Since then, he has had the opportunity to showcase his talent in several renowned opera houses worldwide, including the Ankara Opera House, Bavarian State Opera, Grand Théâtre in Geneva, Hamburg State Opera, Lyric Opera in Chicago, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
