Early Life and Education
Alexei Fomich Andriyashiv was born on February 17, 1826, in the farm of Germanivshchyna, Poltava Governorate. He initially studied at the Pereyaslav Spiritual Seminary, then the Nezhyn Law Lyceum, and finally at the Kiev University (now Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev).
Public Service and Education
In 1850, after obtaining a law degree, Andriyashiv taught law at the Chernigov Gymnasium. He later became an inspector at the First Gymnasium of the Kiev Educational District in 1860 and its head in 1863, a position he held for 28 years. He also actively participated in other educational institutions and engaged in charitable work.
Philanthropy and Civic Activities
Andriyashiv played a significant role in Ukrainian society. He edited the "Kiev People's Calendar" (1864), published the newspaper "Friend of the People" (1867-1876), and helped establish the Kiev City Library (1865). He was also instrumental in founding the Kiev Trusteeship for Assistance to Blinded Soldiers in 1879.
Interest in Apiculture
In his later years, Andriyashiv developed a passion for apiculture. He established his own apiary in Kiev and began publishing the journal "Yearbook of Apiculture" (1895). In 1897, he became the chairman of the South Russian Beekeeping Society.
Foundation of the Practical School of Apiculture
In 1902, Andriyashiv obtained land from the government to establish a "Practical School of Apiculture" in Boyarka. The school was opened in Kiev in 1904 and relocated to Boyarka in the same year. It continues to operate today as the "Boyarska College of Ecology and Natural Resources," a branch of the National University of Bioresources and Nature Management of Ukraine.
Later Years and Legacy
Despite suffering from poor health, Andriyashiv continued to work in the field of apiculture. He died on July 31, 1907, and was buried at the Baikove Cemetery in Kiev. The school he founded was renamed in his honor in 1909. In 2009, a monument was erected at the Boyarska College to commemorate his legacy.
