Alexey Zharkov: Euromidan Activist and Hero of Ukraine

Early Life and Education

Alexey Zharkov was born on April 10, 1975, in Sumy, Ukraine. He attended Sumy Secondary School No. 11, graduating in 1992. Subsequently, he worked as a carpenter at the M.V. Frunze Sumy Machine-Building Scientific Production Association.

After completing his secondary education, Zharkov graduated from Sumy University and pursued entrepreneurial ventures. He had a passion for travel and participated in the Orange Revolution of 2004.

Euromidan Activism and Martyrdom

On February 18, 2014, Zharkov joined the Euromaidan protests in Kyiv. Tragedy struck on February 20, when he was fatally shot by a sniper bullet that pierced his metal shield and bulletproof vest on Institutskya Street.

Recognition and Remembrance

Hero of Ukraine

Posthumously, on November 21, 2014, Zharkov was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star for his bravery, patriotism, and unwavering defense of democratic principles.

Other Honors

In June 2015, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarchate) bestowed upon him the Medal "For Sacrifice and Love for Ukraine" posthumously.

Legacy

Alexey Zharkov's sacrifice and heroism during the Euromaidan revolution continue to inspire Ukrainians in their struggle for freedom and democracy. He is forever remembered as a member of the "Heavenly Hundred," a group of protesters who were killed during the historic protests.
