Alexei Mikhailovich Denisov: A Distinguished Architect and Restorer
Early Career and ExperienceAlexei Mikhailovich Denisov, a renowned architect and restorer, has dedicated over three decades to preserving and enhancing architectural treasures in Moscow and beyond. From 1978 to 1980, he led the restoration efforts of the Moscow Kremlin walls and towers, as well as the "Khlebny Dom" in the Tsaritsyno estate.
Throughout the 1970s, Denisov also worked on excavation and restoration projects at the Byzantine city of "Tsarichin-Grad" in Yugoslavia. His expertise spans both new construction and restoration.
A Legacy in Moscow
From 1980 to 1999, Denisov worked at "Mosproekt-2," rising through the ranks to become the head of Workshop No. 12, responsible for the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. During this period, he played a pivotal role in designing and restoring numerous buildings in Moscow, including the renowned доходный дом at 43 Sivtsev Vrazhek Street and the Department of Construction building in Nikitsky Pereulok.
Mastermind of Historic Renovations
In 1994, Denisov assumed leadership of Workshop No. 12, where he assembled a team of architects, art historians, and engineers to design and reconstruct the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. He advocated relentlessly for the principles of scientific restoration, ensuring the preservation of its historical integrity.
Diverse Projects and Accolades
From 1999 to 2007, Denisov held leadership positions at "Simargl" and the Center for Restoration of National Monuments (CNRPM). Under his guidance, numerous iconic buildings underwent restoration, including the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Conservatory, and the Kazan State University.
Denisov's expertise extended to the restoration of historical and religious structures, such as the 14th-century Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Gorodnya and the Sobornaya Gora complex in Smolensk. He also contributed to the design of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
Advocacy and International Recognition
Beyond his practical work, Denisov has been an ardent advocate for cultural heritage preservation. He has spoken at countless conferences, lobbied for the protection of monuments, and participated in national and international exhibitions on restoration. In recognition of his achievements, he was elected to the Russian Academy of Architectural Heritage and the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS UNESCO.
