Early Life and Education
Toramanian, an Armenian architect and archaeologist, was born in Shapin-Kara hisar, Ottoman Empire, in 1864. After completing his education at the Constantinople Academy of Fine Arts, he began designing private and public buildings in Constantinople.
Work in Bulgaria and Romania
In 1896, Toramanian relocated to Bulgaria and later to Romania, where he continued his architectural practice.
Archaeological Research at Ani and Zvartnots
In 1902, Toramanian joined an expedition to Ani, an ancient Armenian capital. In 1904, he participated in the excavations of the Zvartnots Church under the invitation of Archimandrite Khachik Dadyan. He published his findings in the 1905 work "The Church of Zvartnots."
Later Career in the Armenian SSR
After Ani fell under Turkish control in 1921, Toramanian's research there was interrupted. In 1923, he became a member of the newly established Committee for the Protection of Ancient Monuments in the Armenian SSR. He played a role in the reconstruction of the Echmiadzin Cathedral.
From 1930 to 1932, Toramanian served as head of the architectural department of the Historical Museum in Yerevan. He was also a member of the All-Armenian Congress.
Recognition and Legacy
Toramanian received the title of Honored Scientist of the Armenian SSR in 1933. He passed away in 1934. In 1969, the Armenian Academy of Sciences established the Toramanian Memorial Medal. In 2000, a postage stamp was issued in his honor.
