Early Life and Career
Boris Gulko was born in the Soviet Union and began his chess education at the prestigious Leningrad Palace of Pioneers chess school under the tutelage of renowned trainer Vladimir Zak. He earned the title of Master of Sport of the USSR in 1977 and competed in several Leningrad championships.
Soviet Success
In 1985, Gulko emerged victorious against Vladislav Vorotnikov in an additional match, securing the Leningrad championship. He also shared 2nd-3rd place in the 1984 "White Nights" international tournament in Leningrad.
Emigration and American Triumph
After a brief stay in Italy, Gulko relocated to the United States. He obtained the title of International Master in 1990 and became a Grandmaster two years later. Gulko shared the 1993 US Championship with Alexander Shabalov and won the title outright in 1996.
Olympiad Success
As part of the American team, Gulko claimed third place at the 1996 World Chess Olympiad and finished second in 1998.
Coaching Career
Gulko has also been actively involved in coaching. In the 1980s, he served as a second to Irina Levitina and assisted Vladimir Epishin and Alexander Khalifman. In the United States, he led the Yermo Chess Academy for a period of time.
