Armenian Chess Player and Coach
Ashot Nadjanian is an Armenian chess player and coach. He achieved the title of International Master in 1997 and was awarded the title of Honored Trainer of Armenia in 1998 and FIDE Trainer in 2007. In 1996, he developed and introduced a new system in the theory of openings, which was named after him - the Nadjanian Variation of the Grunfeld Defense.
Biography
Nadjanian graduated from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports in 1994, specializing in chess coaching. He has represented Armenia in various national and international chess competitions throughout his career.
From 1999 to 2001, Nadjanian served as the head coach of the Kuwait men's national team, and from 2005 to 2010, he coached the Singapore national team. Since 2011, he has been the second of Levon Aronian, one of Armenia's top chess players.
Nadjanian has participated in three USSR Junior Championships (1987, 1988, 1989) and the Armenian Championship finals three times (1997, 1998, 1999). He played in the 32nd Chess Olympiad in Yerevan in 1996 and the first European Championship in Saint Vincent in 1999.
In the Zonal Tournament for the World Championship in Panormo in 1998, Nadjanian achieved a shared 7th-11th place among 72 participants. He has also achieved notable results in various international tournaments, including 1st-2nd places in Czestochowa (1992), 1st place in Tbilisi (1996), and 1st-2nd places in Pasanauri (1997).
Nadjanian has two Grandmaster norms and has achieved impressive results against strong competition, including a 35th place out of 132 participants, many of whom were Grandmasters, in the Moscow Aeroflot Open Tournament in 2002. He has also achieved 2nd-3rd places in Moscow (2004), 6th-10th places in Kuala Lumpur (2006), 2nd-3rd places in Tarakan, ASEAN Cup (2008), 3rd-7th places in Kuala Lumpur (2008), and 6th-10th places in Seoul (2008).
