Aleksei Ocherklevych: A Distinguished Ukrainian Leader
Military Service and LeadershipAleksei Ocherklevych, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has served as Head of the State Guard Service of Ukraine. His military career began with the 1st Mechanized Battalion of the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade as Deputy Commander. Subsequently, he assumed command of the unit and fought in the fierce battle for the Donetsk Airport.
In December 2015, Ocherklevych became the Commander of the 1st Mechanized Battalion of the 54th Brigade, engaging in combat at the Svetlodar Arc in 2016. His exceptional leadership earned him a promotion to Deputy Commander of the brigade in 2017.
On May 29, 2019, President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Ocherklevych as Head of the State Guard Service of Ukraine, a testament to his unwavering commitment to the nation's security.
Controversial Incidents
Injured Soldier Incident:In 2011, while serving as Company Commander in Unit A-1048, Ocherklevych was involved in an incident that resulted in a 20-year-old soldier, Alexei Dyakonov, breaking his leg during a disciplinary exercise involving a 32-kilogram kettlebell. The Military Prosecutor's Office investigated the incident, ultimately not finding sufficient evidence to convict Ocherklevych of exceeding his authority.
Meeting with Motorola:
In December 2014, Ocherklevych had a meeting with the separatist commander Motorola near Donetsk Airport. During the negotiations, Ocherklevych expressed his personal belief that the war was "fratricidal" and driven by politicians. This action garnered significant criticism in Ukraine. Ocherklevych defended his decision, stating that his primary goal was to ensure the safe withdrawal of Ukrainian soldiers.
