Biography of Alexis Weissenberg

Alexis Weissenberg, a French pianist of Jewish-Bulgarian descent, began his musical journey at the age of three. By the age of eight, he had already given his first piano concert. Born in 1929 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Alexis showed a natural talent for music from a young age.

Escape and Imprisonment

In 1941, Alexis and his mother attempted to flee from Nazi-occupied Bulgaria to Turkey. However, their plan was foiled, and they ended up spending three months in a concentration camp. Even during his imprisonment, Alexis continued to play music, entertaining others by performing Schubert's compositions on a German accordion. Eventually, Alexis and his mother managed to reach Istanbul.

Journey to Israel

After their time in Istanbul, Alexis and his mother made their way to Haifa, where one of his mother's sisters lived, and then on to Jerusalem. Alexis enrolled at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and soon began performing with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra when he was just 17 years old. Notably, one of his concerts was conducted by the legendary Leonard Bernstein.

Musical Education in New York

In 1946, Weissenberg traveled to New York to study at the renowned Juilliard School, where he was mentored by the acclaimed music educator Olga Samaroff. He quickly made a name for himself, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra and winning a piano competition.

Comeback and Success

In 1957, after almost a decade of hiatus from concert performances, Weissenberg returned to the stage. During this period, he focused on self-study and teaching. By this time, the musician had already settled in France, having moved there in 1956. In 1966, Weissenberg made a triumphant return with a solo concert in Paris, where he also performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. He has left behind valuable recordings of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky concertos, as well as five piano concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven, all created in collaboration with von Karajan.

Legacy

Alexis Weissenberg's illustrious career came to an end on January 8, 2012, when he passed away after a prolonged illness in Lugano, Switzerland. His contribution to the world of classical music and his remarkable performances will always be remembered.
