Jack Kelsey: An Arsenal Legend
Jack Kelsey, a Welsh footballer, began his career at Wrexham AFC. In 1949, he joined Arsenal FC, where he spent his entire professional career.
Arsenal Career
As Arsenal's goalkeeper, Kelsey made 327 appearances in the English league. He holds the record for the second-most matches played for Arsenal, behind only David Seaman. Kelsey's bravery and agility earned him the nickname "The Cat." He was renowned for his chewing gum habit during matches.
Kelsey helped Arsenal win the English league championship and the FA Community Shield. He was inducted into Arsenal's Hall of Fame, which was located at Highbury Stadium.
International Career
Kelsey represented Great Britain in a match against the European XI in 1955. He made 41 appearances for the Welsh national team, including at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. Wales finished second in their group, behind hosts Sweden but ahead of Hungary and Mexico. They lost to Brazil, featuring a young Pelé, in the quarter-finals.
Kelsey's international career was cut short by a serious injury sustained in a friendly match against Brazil. He collided with Brazilian forward Vavá, forcing him to retire.
Post-Retirement
After retiring, Kelsey held various roles within Arsenal's management. He left the club in 1989.
Legacy and Death
Jack Kelsey passed away on March 18, 1992, in London, at the age of 62. He remains an Arsenal and Welsh football legend, remembered for his exceptional goalkeeping skills and his unwavering commitment to the club and country.
