Early Life and Education
Alfred von Wacano was born in 1846 to Philipp von Wacano, Director of the Hungarian Royal Land Survey, and Christina, Baroness Stedling. As a nobleman, he received a privileged education and graduated from the Vienna Commercial Academy.
Family and Russian Citizenship
In 1876, von Wacano married Anna-Maria-Barbara, the daughter of the Imperial Mining Vice-Director. By 1880, they had two young sons, and in 1897, the family petitioned for Russian citizenship. This request was granted in 1899, after which von Wacano swore allegiance to Russia.
Brewery Enterprise
In 1880, von Wacano established a large-scale steam-powered brewery in Samara, Russia. The brewery boasted an electric power station and enjoyed a national distribution network. It expanded to include a second brewery near Baku in 1908.
Philanthropy and Public Service
von Wacano was a prominent philanthropist and public figure in Samara. He gifted land for a children's orphanage, actively participated in various charitable organizations, and served as a member of the city council and local Red Cross chapter.
World War I and Exile
During World War I, von Wacano was accused of espionage and exiled to the city of Buzuluk. After the Russian Revolution, he and his family fled to Austria, where he passed away in 1929.
Brewing Legacy
The Zhiguli Brewery founded by von Wacano became one of the largest in the USSR during the Soviet era and is now known as OJSC Zhigulevskoye Pivo. The Baku brewery also operated until 1978.
