James Whitman McLamore: Co-founder of Burger King

James Whitman McLamore, born in 1926 in New York City, was one of the co-founders of the renowned fast food chain, Burger King. He received his education at Cornell University, following his earlier studies at Northfield Mount Hermon School.

The Idea behind Burger King

While working in the business industry, McLamore visited a McDonald's restaurant and realized that there were many improvements that could be made to enhance the overall functioning of the chain. This sparked the idea of creating a fast-food network that would operate more efficiently. Together with his friend David Edgerton, also a Cornell graduate, McLamore became the owner of the fast food franchise known as Burger King.

The Evolution of Burger King

The first Burger King restaurant, called "Insta Burger King," was independently opened by Edgerton on March 1, 1954 in Miami, Florida. However, within three months, the entire business concept was revamped and transformed into what is now known as "Burger King Corporation."

In 1957, customers had their first taste of the iconic Whopper, which remains one of the most important burgers in the entire chain. Overcoming the initial challenge of the burgers dripping with grease, the founders had to experiment with various equipment until they perfected the burgers that would become the main attraction for the public.

The franchise quickly expanded, with only five restaurants in 1959, and the idea of franchising was developed in 1960.

The Global Reach of Burger King

Today, Burger King is known worldwide, with over 12,000 restaurants operating in more than 70 countries. Throughout its history, the chain has changed owners multiple times. McLamore and Edgerton sold their creation in 1967. McLamore remained as the president until 1970 and as the chairman until 1976.

Unfortunately, James McLamore passed away from cancer in 1996 at the age of 70 in Florida.
