Early Life and Military Career
Ali Fuat Cebesoy was born in 1882 into a distinguished family. His grandfather, Mehmet Ali Pasha, was a renowned military commander during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. Ali Fuat graduated from military school in 1902 and military college in 1905, joining the Ottoman army as a staff captain.
Involvement in the Balkan Wars and World War I
During the Balkan Wars, Ali Fuat served as chief of staff of a corps and later commanded the 23rd Infantry Division. He played a key role in the battles against Greek forces, despite the ultimate defeat of his division. In World War I, he participated in the Suez and Gallipoli operations, eventually commanding the 14th and 20th Corps.
Role in the Turkish War of Independence
After the Ottoman Empire's collapse, Ali Fuat became involved in the Turkish War of Independence. He commanded the 7th Army and played a significant role in liberating Anatolia from Allied forces.
Political Career
Following the establishment of the Turkish Republic, Ali Fuat was elected to the Turkish parliament and served as its speaker in 1948. He held several ministerial positions, including Minister of War and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Later Life and Legacy
In his later years, Ali Fuat Cebesoy served as Turkey's ambassador to several countries. He passed away in 1968, leaving a lasting legacy as a prominent military commander and political figure in Turkish history.
