Early Life and Education
Born in 1952 in Cornwall, New York, to Dutch immigrants, David Howell Petraeus graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1974. He later obtained a doctorate in international relations from Princeton University in 1985 and served as a faculty member at West Point Military Academy.
Military Career
General Petraeus' military service has spanned deployments in Italy, Germany, Haiti, Kuwait, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Belgium. He commanded the 101st Airborne Division during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and played a key role in training Iraqi security forces from 2004 to 2005.
Commanding U.S. Forces in Iraq
In 2007, Petraeus was appointed by the U.S. Senate to command American troops in Iraq. He acknowledged the "dire situation" in the country and the "tough days" ahead for U.S. soldiers. As commander, he drew upon his prior experience in Iraq, having firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by coalition forces.
Other Appointments
Prior to his Iraq command, Petraeus served as commanding general of the United States Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Personal Life
Petraeus' wife, Holly, comes from a military family, and they have two children, a son and a daughter.
