Ali Hussain Kafi: A Life in Politics and Diplomacy

Early Life and Education

Ali Hussain Kafi was born into a peasant family in the Algerian village of El Harrouch. His father was an adherent of the Rahmania Muslim Brotherhood. In 1946, Kafi traveled to Constantine to pursue his education, where he joined the Algerian People's Party.

Struggle for Independence

During the 1950s, Kafi became a prominent figure in the Algerian struggle for independence from French colonial rule. He played an active role in mobilizing support for liberation movements.

Diplomatic Career

Following Algeria's independence in 1962, Kafi served as Algeria's ambassador to several countries, including Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, and Italy. He gained extensive experience in international diplomacy and became a respected figure on the world stage.

Head of State

In 1992, after the assassination of President Mohamed Boudiaf, Kafi was appointed to head the High State Council. As the country's interim leader, he implemented strict measures to combat fundamentalism. He enacted new anti-terrorism laws, expanded police powers, and imposed a curfew.

Legacy

Kafi's tenure as head of state was marked by his unwavering resolve to maintain stability and security in Algeria. He played a crucial role in navigating the country through a turbulent period and setting the foundation for future democratic reforms. In 1994, he was succeeded by Liamine Zéroual.
