Isabel Díaz Ayuso: A Prominent Politician in Spain
Early Life and EducationIsabel Díaz Ayuso was born in the Chamberí district of Madrid, Spain. Her parents worked in the medical and orthopaedic sales industry. Ayuso pursued a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid and later obtained a master's degree in Business Administration, specializing in Political Communication and Protocol.
Entry into Politics
Ayuso joined the People's Party (PP) in 2005 and entered the political sphere in 2006 when she joined the press department of the Councilor for Justice and Internal Affairs in the Madrid regional government. She gained recognition under President Esperanza Aguirre and became responsible for online communications, notably during Cristina Cifuentes' election campaign in 2015.
Electoral Success
Ayuso participated in the 2011 Madrid Assembly elections but was not initially elected. However, she became a deputy in the ninth legislature after the resignation of Engracia Hidalgo. She was re-elected in the 2015 regional elections and served as the parliamentary group's spokesperson in the tenth Assembly.
Rise to Leadership
In 2019, Ayuso was nominated to lead the PP's list for the 2019 Madrid Assembly elections after Pablo Casado's appointment as party leader. This made her the candidate for President of the Community of Madrid.
Presidency of the Community of Madrid
In the May 2019 elections, the PP secured 30 seats in the Assembly, making it the second largest party behind the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Ayuso was nominated as President candidate by the Speaker of the Madrid Assembly, Juan Trinidad. She was elected with the support of the PP, Ciudadanos, and Vox, receiving 68 votes "for" and 64 votes "against."
