Ali Wong: American Actress, Comedian, and Writer
Early Life and EducationAli Wong was born on April 19, 1982, in Pacific Heights, San Francisco, California. Her father, Adolph Wong, an American of Chinese descent, was an anesthesiologist. Her mother, Tam "Tammy" Wong (née Nguyen), a Vietnamese immigrant from Hue, arrived in the US in the 1960s. Raised in a Chinese cultural environment, Ali was the youngest of four children.
She graduated from San Francisco University High School in 2000, where she served as class president. At the University of California, Los Angeles, where she majored in Asian American Studies, Wong discovered her passion for performing as a member of the campus's LCC Theater, the oldest Asian American theater company in the United States. During her junior year, Wong spent time in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Career Beginnings
Upon graduating college in 2005 at the age of 23, Wong ventured into stand-up comedy at the Brainwash Cafe before relocating to New York City to pursue it further. In New York, she performed up to nine times a night. In 2011, Variety magazine named Wong one of their "10 Comics to Watch."
Television and Film Career
Wong landed her breakout role in the NBC sitcom "Are You There, Chelsea?" and made appearances on "Chelsea Lately." She went on to host VH1's "Best Week Ever" and MTV's "Hey Girl" in 2013. Notable film credits include roles in "Savages" (2012) and "Dealin' with Idiots" (2013).
In 2014, Wong starred as Dr. Lina Lark in the ABC medical drama series "Black Box." She has also written for the sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat." On Mother's Day 2016, Netflix released her stand-up special "Baby Cobra," filmed in September 2015 while she was seven months pregnant at the Neptune Theater in Seattle.
Personal Life
Wong married Justin Hakuta in 2014. In November 2015, the couple welcomed their daughter Mari, named after author Marie Kondo. Their second child was born in December 2017. Wong and her husband live in Los Angeles. Hakuta is of Filipino and Japanese descent.
