Alihan Smailov: Kazakhstan's 12th Prime Minister

Alihan Smailov is the 12th Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, appointed on January 11, 2022. His family lineage traces back to the Kanly clan.

Education and Early Career

Smailov graduated from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 1994 with a degree in Applied Mathematics. In 1996, he obtained a master's degree in Public Administration from the Almaty Institute of Management, Economics and Forecasting.

Smailov began his career in 1993 as an employee of the A-Invest Investment and Privatization Fund. Subsequently, he held various roles in the government, including as Chief Specialist in the Trade and Industry Department of Almaty, Intern in the Supreme Economic Council, and Deputy Head and Head of Department in the National Statistical Agency.

Senior Government Positions

In 1999, Smailov was appointed Chairman of the Agency of Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He then served as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Board of the State Insurance Company for Export Credits and Investments.

From 2007 to 2008, Smailov was the President of the KazAgro National Holding. He later returned to the Ministry of Finance as Vice Minister and, in 2018, became Minister of Finance.

Ascension to Prime Minister

In December 2015, Smailov was appointed Assistant to the President before becoming First Deputy Prime Minister in January 2021. On January 5, 2022, he was named Acting Prime Minister and on January 11, 2022, he was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Other Notable Affiliations

Throughout his career, Smailov has held various board positions, including on the Board of Directors of the Samruk National Welfare Fund and the Foreign Investors Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He also represents Kazakhstan on the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

Awards and Honors

Smailov has been recognized for his contributions with the Order of Parasat (2020), as well as various medals, including the Medal for Contribution to the Creation of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Personal Life

Alihan Smailov is married to Balzhan Duanbekovna Smailova and together they have three children: Aszhan Ayzere Alikhanuly, Aszhan Zhauniya Alikhanuly, and Aszhan Alisultan Alikhanuly. His siblings include Tolqyn A. Abildaeyeva and Erzan A. Smailov.
