Early Life and Athletic Beginnings

Alisa Camplin, an Australian moguls and aerials skier, was born in Melbourne. From a young age, she excelled in athletics, winning several junior titles in 800m and 1500m running. However, at 14, she was diagnosed with anemia and switched to gymnastics.

From Gymnastics to Freestyle Skiing

Injury forced Camplin to leave gymnastics at 16, leading her back to running. However, illness forced her to give up athletics two years later. In college, she turned her attention to field hockey.

Unlike many of her competitors who transitioned from alpine skiing, Camplin had never seen snow before attending college. At 19, she witnessed freestyle skiing demonstrations by Jackie Cooper and the Australian team. Encouraged by coaches, she began ski training thanks to her gymnastics background.

World Championship Debut and Success

Camplin made her World Championship debut at 25, finishing 7th. Her breakthrough came in 2000 when she won the World Cup, becoming the first Australian to claim that title. She finished the 2000-01 World Cup season in 5th place, with her mentor and teammate Cooper taking the top spot.

Olympic Champion

In 2002, tragedy struck Cooper during Olympic training when she suffered an injury that prevented her from competing. Camplin, who had not previously achieved significant international success, shocked the world by winning gold in both moguls and aerials.
