Alison Kingsley: A Journey of Excess and Recovery
Anorexia-Induced HerniaAlison Kingsley, a 42-year-old British woman, faced a life-threatening medical crisis due to her excessive weight gain. Her dependency on food led to the development of a hernia that protruded from her abdomen. The condition, a result of overeating, required immediate surgical intervention.

Near-Death Experience
After initially undergoing surgery to remove an abscess on her fallopian tube in October 2010, Kingsley's condition worsened with the onset of a hernia. The hernia caused her abdominal wall to collapse. "The doctor said it was a hernia, and it was because of my weight," Kingsley recounted. "The pressure from my weight was pushing my hernia out further and further. I was devastated."

Desperation and Embarrassment
As Kingsley's weight continued to increase after the birth of her daughter, Ellis, she sought professional help from dieticians and even tried hypnotherapy, but nothing curtailed her food consumption. The hernia grew so large that people mistook it for a pregnancy. "As well as the pain, I felt incredibly embarrassed," admitted Kingsley. "People genuinely thought I was pregnant."

Medical Intervention
In despair, Kingsley pleaded with doctors for assistance. They explained that they could only address her hernia if she lost weight. When Kingsley confessed that she was barely able to walk, the medical team decided to proceed with removing the hernia and performing a sleeve gastrectomy to reduce her food intake and prevent weight gain.

Post-Operative Complications
Kingsley underwent a successful gastrectomy in September 2013, transforming her appearance with a flatter abdomen. However, several days later, Kingsley experienced extreme weakness and persistent vomiting at home. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with pneumonia.
Induced Coma and Recovery
Three weeks later, Kingsley awoke surrounded by wires and tubes. She realized that she had been placed in a medically induced coma to repair a surgical mesh that had melted due to her fever. "My friends were incredible throughout my stay in hospital. They set up a Facebook group, giving regular updates on my progress," Kingsley said. "They even took turns looking after Ellis."
Challenging Rehabilitation
Kingsley's injuries were severe. Initially, she could barely speak or walk. She underwent months of intensive physiotherapy before she was discharged in December 2013.
Triumph Over Adversity
Despite the setbacks, Kingsley expressed gratitude for her decision to undergo surgery. She has since lost 126 pounds and overcome her battle with a stretched and insatiable stomach. "I have so much more energy now," Kingsley stated. "My confidence is sky high and shopping is a joy again like it used to be."
A New Lease on Life
Kingsley has embraced exercise, including swimming, fitness classes, and even horseback riding, a childhood passion that she is now finally able to pursue once more. "Looking back at how miserable I was, with my huge stomach, makes me appreciate how happy I am now and how much better my life is," she concluded.
