A Stomach Full of Treasures

The Perplexing Case of Rooney Khatun

In a shocking incident, 22-year-old Rooney Khatun from West Bengal, India, was found to have ingested over 1.6 kilograms of jewelry, coins, and other objects. Initially presenting with nausea after every meal, a scan revealed the astonishing contents of her stomach.

The Discovery

On July 16, 2019, Rooney was rushed to the operating table at Rampurhat State Hospital. Surgeons discovered 69 necklaces, 80 earrings, 46 coins, eight medallions, 11 nose rings, five bracelets, and a wristwatch lodged within her digestive system.

A Mystery Unveiled

Rooney's mother revealed that gold items and jewelry had been mysteriously disappearing from their home. Unbeknownst to her, her daughter was the culprit. It is suspected that Rooney collected coins from her brother's shop. Despite family confrontations about the missing items, she remained silent and would often weep.

Physical Deterioration

"We kept an eye on her, but she somehow managed to continue swallowing jewelry," said Rooney's mother. "For the past two months, she had been unwell." Following unsuccessful treatment from private doctors, Rooney was admitted to Rampurhat State Hospital.

Surgical Intervention

Doctors determined that most of the ingested objects were made of copper or brass. Dr. Siddhartha Biswas, the head of surgery at Rampurhat Hospital, explained that Rooney's stomach was "crammed," preventing her from consuming any food.

Critical Condition

Rooney's condition was critical. She required five units of blood transfusion and was placed on total parenteral nutrition, an artificial method of providing nutrients through her veins.

A Lengthy Procedure

The surgical procedure to remove the foreign objects lasted for one hour and 15 minutes. After extracting the 1.6 kilograms of jewelry, doctors displayed the items on a table to illustrate the extent of Rooney's condition.

Psychological Factors

Medical professionals believe that a mental disorder may have driven Rooney's obsessive behavior. Her current condition is reportedly stable.
